On this day tour to Prometheus Caves, we will explore the Industrial Chiatura, Katskhi Pillar Natural wonder, Stunning Prometheus Caves and a 1000 year old cathedral of Bagrati.

We will start our day early. At 08:00 our team will meet you at your hotel and lead you to your car to start the tour.

First stop of the day is Chiatura – a well known mining city, famous for its soviet Cable cars. We will reach Chiatura after 2 hours of driving through beautiful rural landscapes. In Chiatura we will hear the stories about the city and climb on top of it with one of the cable cars.

Next we will move to Katskhi – a natural 45 meter pillar with a church on top. Hermit monks have lived here throughout the centuries. They spend their whole life on top of the rock formation, in complete isolation from the rest of the world. We will take a look at the pillar as well as the surrounding monastery.

After we visit Katskhi, we will move on to Kutaisi, where we will stop for a lunch at one of the local restaurants upon your preference. Kutaisi is known as one of the best food destinations in Georgia, so restaurants here serve great food!

Once we’re done enjoying local delicacies, we will stop at the Prometheus Caves. Prometheus caves are famous for a huge number of stalactites and stalagmites, formed over a period of millions of years. Inside we will walk through the whole cave, enjoying the breathtaking scenes, beautiful lights accompanied by classical music gems.

In the evening we will return to Kutaisi, to visit the 1000 year old Bagrati Cathedral, to learn about it’s interesting history and enjoy the beautiful panorama views of Kutaisi – if we’re lucky, we might even encounter a sunset.

Finally, we’ll head back to Tbilisi and at around 20:00 our team will deliver you to your hotel in Tbilisi.

Itinerary

08:00Departure

Early in the morning, our team will pick you up from your hotel or apartment and we’ll begin our day tour to Kutaisi. As this is a long tour (12-13 hours) we start early to save time and avoid the traffic.

10:15Chiatura & Cable Car Ride

Chiatura is an industrial city located 2 hours away from Tbilisi. People have lived in this area, on the banks of the Kvirila river since the ancient times. Today it’s known as the biggest mining town in Georgia.

People mostly rely on the mines as the job provider and the population is people mostly over 30.

Chiatura is also known for its caves: most of them were carved out during the invasions of Marvan II ibn Muhamad in the 8th century. People used them as shelter during the war times. The caves are now only accessible via mountain climbing.

10:40Katkshi Pillar

Katskhi Pillar is a true wonder of nature. A 45-meter-tall rock formation is on the IUCN Red list as a natural wonder.

A small church is erected on top of the natural pillar. Hermit monks have lived here ever since the chapel was constructed. They live lives in complete isolation without ever coming down.

12:30Lunch in Kutaisi

We will choose one of the local restaurants with your preference and enjoy local delicacies there. After all Kutaisi is known as one of the best food destinations in Georgia.

14:00Prometheus Caves

Prometheus caves are the number 1 most popular sight in Georgia for a reason – These caves have of stalactites and stalagmites formed for millions of years to look like they do today.

Beautiful Caves, stunning illumination and best of classical music make this visit unforgettable. Plus you can optionally take the underground boat ride.

16:30Bagrati Cathedral

Bagrati Cathedral stands in Kutaisi – the third largest city in Georgia. This church was built in the 10th-11th centuries AD by King Bagrat the 3rd.

This church is the symbol of unity and strength of Georgia. It was constructed to celebrate the unification of the smaller kingdoms (regions) that make Georgia as we know it today.

Bagrati cathedral has seen many invasions and destruction throughout the centuries, however it was recently restored to its original design.

Bagrati Cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Sight.

20:00Arrive in Tbilisi

After visiting the Bagrati Cathedral, we’ll drive back to Tbilisi. On the way making optional stops for practicalities.

At around 20:00, we’ll reach Tbilisi and our team will deliver you to your hotel or any address of your preference in Tbilisi.
